Emiratisation in the UAE Thesis Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 12500 words

Emiratisation in the UAE - Thesis Example They believe that the organizational culture in the private sector employment is not according to their personality and their diversity is not helping to achieve the required level of organizational performance. In addition to that, the young Emiratis also face the language problem. The normal language in the private sector employment is English and it is highly required that employees must understand and communicate with the use of English language. Unfortunately, a considerable number of Emiratis do not have frequency while communicating with the use of English language. This situation further adds fuel to the fire of their perceptions about the private sector employment. In addition to that, they face the issue of career development as well. Many Emiratis have not been given opportunity to understand their career roadmap so that they become in a position to determine and decide their future career track. In this regard, the absence of career counseling is also considerably contrib uting. Moreover, the charm in the public sector employment does not allow the young Emiratis to apply in the private sector employment. Currently, more and more young Emiratis are showing their keen interest in the public sector employment and they admire that the workplace environment, flexible working hours, attractive remuneration packages and benefits are those factors that attract the young Emiratis to only consider the public sector employment as a worthwhile opportunity and at the same time, this works as discouraging factor to applying to the private sector employment. On the other hand, the private sector employers have also developed strange beliefs about the locals. They believe that the locals are less inclined to work and are more inclined to avoid private sector work. They believe that the locals have different lifestyle and at the same time they contend that the locals have not much to offer in the shape of interpersonal skills, communication skills, expertise and

Fahrenheit 451 Analysis Essay Example for Free

Fahrenheit 451 Analysis Essay The theme of Ray Bradburys classic Fahrenheit 451 can be viewed from several different angles. First and foremost, the book gives an anti-censorship message. Bradbury understood censorship to be a natural outcropping of an overly tolerant society. Yet, the protagonist Guy Montag is one of the few that is courageous enough to find out the truth for himself. This unexpected discovery on the corruption of society challenged traditional values, knowledge and beliefs. The personal freedom to the right of an individual having the freedom of expression when he utilizes the issue of censorship in Fahrenheit 451. In Bradburys novel, society has evolved to such an extreme that all literature is illegal to possess. Because of the trouble books may cause, they were banned altogether. For example, one group might think they had a really great idea and wrote it in a book, however, the other group might object to something that has been written, that means the book will have to be modified and therefore censorship begins. Soon, another group objects to something else in the book, and it is again edited, eventually the original product will be lost. Because of this presented danger, no longer can books be read, not only because they might offend someone, but because books raise questions for the people that the government cannot answer. The intellectual thinking that comes from knowledge can often be dangerous, yet, who would want to do that when they can take the easy route? â€Å"Ignorance is bliss† applies perfectly here. The government would rather rule the people orderly than have them start a revolution with knowledge. This philosophy, according to the book, completely ignores the benefits of knowledge. True, knowledge can cause disharmony because it causes people to ask â€Å"why†, but in many ways, knowledge of the past, which is recorded in books, can prevent mankind from making similar mistakes in the present and future. The society envisioned in Fahrenheit 451 is corrupted. As Captain Beatty explains, government control of peoples lives there was not a conspiracy of dictators, but a consensus of everyday people instead. The citizens are so weak-minded that they dont want to think for themselves and solve the troubling problems of the world. They don’t have much emotion, because they prefer pleasure over hurt. The only way they can do this is to not care. The parlor women, for example, cannot see past the surface. They are more interested in looks than reality; they are so shallow that they cannot see one’s true qualities. It is far easier to live a life of seclusion and a life where technology will provide you with all necessities. Yet more importantly, Fahrenheit 451 described the people in that society as anti-social. Clarisse, the only â€Å"normal† girl mentioned that people in that society doesn’t talk much, at all. They are â€Å"either shouting or dancing around like wild† (30), but the key point is, â€Å"people don’t talk about anything† (31), â€Å"they name a lot of cars or clothes or swimming pools mostly and say how swell!† (31) They do not quite live in the reality, only using abstract things to entertain themselves. â€Å"They all say the same things and nobody says anything different† (31) because in their eyes, technology and the government is always correct. This is very similar to our world today, almost everyone some kind of technology: television, computer, hand held devices. When we have a choice between technology or nature. It is almost certain that technology wins. We are on the computer three to four hours a day, doing work, checking email, social media, or just simply surfing the web. Our everyday life is technology; we depe nd on it so much that it is almost impossible to live without it. People in the novel are afraid of themselves, of what their minds are capable of doing. They fear the thought of knowing, which leads them to depend on others, such as technology and the government to think for them. The best example would be the protagonist Guy Montag. His entire view on life shifted as the book progressed. He was originally a normal fireman, but when he met his neighbor Clarisse McClennen, who was considered a misfit in the society, he began to see things differently. Instead of burning books because it’s useless information to the public, he now wants to share its knowledge with the whole world. Montag is at war with the society, he’s battling against the â€Å"common knowledge† and laws, trying to shine some light on the people. Thus, the book successfully advocates the idea that men should think for themselves, not let technology or any outside sources decide for them. Technology may provide you with joy, but to live life to the fullest, you have to try everything, and there are no substitute for the treasure you can find in books. It’s like Montag said, â€Å"I went around doing one thing and feeling another.† (131) as he reflects on all the trouble that he has gotten into because he has not been true to himself. Although this path might not be easy, it is necessary for any society that doesnt wish to repeat the mistakes of the past to earn knowledge. Our society today needs to realize that before it is too late.

Introduction To Marketing Mix Marketing Essay

Introduction To Marketing Mix Marketing Essay Marketing Mix is one of the most fundamental concepts in marketing management. For gaining clients and for revenue promotion, every business owner has to concentrate on four primary and three prolonged elements/components. The primary components of selling mix include product, pricing, distributive programs (place) and revenue promotion techniques while the prolonged components are actual proof, individuals and procedure. A fair combination of these marketing components is called Marketing Mix. Product A product is products that meets what a customer needs or wants. It may be a concrete excellent or an intangible assistance. Intangible products are service-based like the travel and leisure industry, the hotel industry and loan agencies. Tangible products are those that have actual existence. If your product is really excellent and benefits your clients, theyll spread the very excellent news. Theyll tell their friends and family. Theyll be very excited to share your brand and name with others causing you to have an excellent windfall of cash and plenty of company. Price Price is the money that must be paid by the customer to obtain products or solutions. The cost of a product must be relevant to the product/service and to the industry. Of all the aspects of the marketing mix, cost is the one, which creates revenue all the others are costs. The cost of products is clearly an important determinant of the value of revenue made. In theory, cost is really determined by the discovery of what clients perceive is the value of the product on sale. Place Physical submission (place) is the delivery of goods at the right time and at the right position to clients. Physical submission of product is possible through programs of submission which are many and varied in character. A marketing manager has to select a channel which is convenient, economical and suitable for the submission of the result. Promotion Promotion is an action to introduce products or solutions on the target audience, to build customer views about manufacturer or solutions offered. Marketing consists of components such as: advertising, advertising, personal selling and revenue promotion. Process Process is a series of actions that are necessary to offer products or solutions with the best solutions to the customer. A procedure can contain about the method or procedure that is put in position to acquire the needed customer product. Service of procedure is quick, easy and friendly giving more value to clients of a product. People People are all the individuals involved in the action of producing products and offer product solutions to clients. Those who produce and industry a product also has an assessment in the eyes of clients. Physical evidence Physical proof is the product a system that is needed to back up the appearance of a product, so display directly the quality of products or solutions provided to clients. From the discussion of the importance of selling mix in a company, it can be concluded that the seven existing factors in the marketing mix are connected, so there should be excellent synchronizations among these components to achieve marketing objectives in terms of volume of revenue and customer service. McCarthy, Michael (2002, December 2, updated 2002, December 3 If I would be Joe then I would apply the 7 Ps marketing mix to the corner store in the following way: Product Your product marketing choices will differ based on the type of retail store shop you run and your potential viewers. The factors that impact the understanding of quality include product packaging style, service strategy options, assurance, materials and shades. If you are marketing your shop and products to a high-end audience, for example, you might select an stylish, simple style and cool colors; for a family-friendly shop, you might trim more toward shiny, strong shades and large print styles. Joe did not focus on the products and the needs of the clients. Price Price is an integral aspect of a retail store marketing mix; if your clients cannot afford your products, they are unlikely to regular your shop. Most of the products in your shop should be in a comfortable variety for your potential viewers base; to get this information, you will need to execute an viewers research to get an idea of average income and spending power. To make a feeling of desire and to give an option for a spend, you can also offer some products that are priced just out of your focus on clients normal cost variety. Joe billed more prices for its products which redirected the clients to the next best alternative. Place In retail store, the style of your shop and the way you present your products is an integral aspect of the marketing mix. The show should fit your picture so that clients experience a natural experience. In a high-end store, products are often placed father apart to make a feeling of lack and exclusivity; in a computer shop, show designs are set at hips size to allow examining. Positioning can help bring certain products to interest and enhance products you want to offer more of. Joe did not pay manual intervention to the preparations and show of shop products. The position of shop was also not great position for clients and for vehicle parking of clients. Promotion Promotion is the most identifiable aspect of the marketing mix. It includes all of the marketing actions you do to let your clients know about the products you offer. For a retail store shop, you might enhance in magazines and on the air stations, start a social advertising strategy, use marketing e-mails, hand out leaflets or strategy grand-opening events. Your marketing strategies should be targeted to your consumer platform. Choose guides that they read, programs they pay attention to or watch, and duplicate or graphics that will speak out loud with them. Joes starting was very silent. He did not allow individuals to know what he is going to offer. He did not perform any marketing activity. Physical Layout The structure of your shop shows should be given consideration. The goal is to make an environment in which your product normally originates and shows itself to your clients. But how is this achieved, and how do we make a shop shopper friendly? Joes shop structure was not consumer helpful. Process The procedures in your shop are actions that you execute in your shop for offering client value. Joe did not know about procedures like supply sequence or stock management etc. People Customers are likely to be devoted to companies that serve them well. In your shop cure every individual very well whether he is client, provider, or any individual who visit your shop. Joes treatment with his instructor was excellent but he did not act upon the tips of his instructors. References: McCarthy, J. (1975), Basic Marketing: a managerial approach, Homewood, IL Baker, M. Observation Joe could observe how customers act. It provides many ideas, but can leave questions un answered. Statement works well in retail markets; sit outside a shop and observe how many individuals walk by, look at the window display etc. Postal surveys Joe could deliver to the address of prospective clients who complete the form and deliver returning in a pre-paid package. Relatively cheap, a mailing study can cover a wide regional place and prevents the prospective for interview panel member prejudice. However, reaction rates (the percentage of individuals delivering returning a completed survey) are often very low and it can take be a while before enough on the internet testimonials are came back. Telephone interviews Not to be puzzled with telesales (which is a technique of selling), the phone interview allow faster reviews than a mailing study. However, prospective clients are often careful of being called and may be hesitant to give anything other than short answers Online surveys It is popular and relatively low cost technique. Internet on the internet testimonials are widely used by little companies as a way of catching the opinions of average person about the item, price etc. Face-to-face surveys Joe could visit different individuals and could perform personal meetings face-to-face. It is a costly, but excellent way to get specific ideas from an individual Focus groups Groups of prospective clients are brought together to talk about their feelings about a item or industry. Concentrate categories are a excellent way of getting information about client preferences and choices. Test marketing This includes promoting a new item in a little area of the industry to be able to evaluate client reaction. For example, a start-up could begin by promoting to a limited community to be able to iron-out item issues.   References: Kotler, P., (1988) Marketing Management: Analysis Planning and Control, Prentice-Hall p. 102. These are the indicates of decoding information in order to give route to choice. These designs may be automated or may not. Common resources are: Time sequence sales modes Product changing models Straight line programming Flexibility designs (price, earnings, need, provide, etc.) Regression and connection models Research of Difference (ANOVA) models Understanding analysis Reduced cash flow Worksheet what if models These and identical mathematical, mathematical, econometric and financial designs are the systematic subsystem of the MIS. A relatively moderate financial commitment in a pc is enough to allow a business to improve case study of its information. Some of the designs used are stochastic, i.e. those containing a probabilistic factor whereas others are deterministic designs where opportunity performs no part. Product changing designs are stochastic since these show brand options in possibilities whereas linear development is deterministic in that the connections between factors are indicated in actual mathematical conditions. The primary market research that I have undertaken prior to opening a retail store like Joes is discussed below. Main promotion analysis is gathered for initially. It is original and gathered for a particular purpose like starting a new business or to fix a particular problem. It is expensive, and difficult, but is more targeted than additional analysis. There are many ways to perform primary analysis. We consider some of them: Interviews Secret shopping Concentrate groups Projective techniques Item tests Diaries Interviews Interviews are performed between a market specialist and a participant. Information is gathered on a study. Some surveys are very firm or structured and use shut questions. Information is easily compared. Mystery Shopping Companies set up mystery purchasing strategies on an companies part. Often used in financial, offering, travel, bars and dining places, and many other client targeted companies, mystery customers will enter, appearing as real clients. They collect data on client support and the client experience. Focus Groups Focus categories are made up from a variety of selected participants based together in the same room. Extremely experienced scientists work with the attention group to collect detailed qualitative reviews. Projective techniques Projective methods are obtained from the field of mindset. They will generate highly very subjective qualitative data. Product tests Product assessments are often completed as part of the test promotion process. Products are shown in a shopping mall of purchasing shopping mall. Potential clients are requested to visit the store and their purchase actions are noticed. Experts will consider how the item is managed, how the packaging is read, how a while the consumer usually spends with the item, and so on. Diaries Diaries are used by a variety of specially enrolled customers. They are requested to complete a journal that details and records their purchasing actions of an occasion period (weeks, months, or years). References: Chisnall, P.M. (1997) Marketing Research, Fifth Edition, London: McGraw-Hill McQuarrie, Edward F., The Market Research Toolbox : A Concise Guide for Beginners. McMartin, J. (1995) Personality Psychology: A student Centered Approach, UK: Sage Publications The secondary market research that I have undertaken prior to opening a retail store like Joes is discussed below. Additional promotion analysis already prevails in one type or another. It is relatively inexpensive, and can be performed quite easily .However, it tends to have been gathered for factors other than for the issue or purpose at side. So it may be untargeted, and challenging to use to create evaluations. There are a variety of such resources available to the expert, and the following record is under no circumstances conclusive: Trade companies National and regional media Market publications National/international government authorities Websites Informal connections Trade internet directories Published organization accounts Business libraries Professional institutions and organizations Omnibus surveys Previously gathered promotion research Census data Public records For an established retail business, research should not just be about surveying your current customers or when conducting standard customer service research. Face-to-face surveys After starting a new retail store business experience to deal with study is a excellent research tool to get proper reviews about a item from a client. Postal surveys Questionnaire types can also be sent the mailing details of prospective clients in pre-paid covers. They can complete and send returning these types to the senders address returning. Focus groups Groups of prospective clients are brought together to talk about their feelings about a item or market. Concentrate categories are a excellent way of getting information about client preferences and choices. References: 1. Kotler, P., (1988) Marketing Management: Analysis Planning and Control, Prentice-Hall p. 102. 2. Agnilar, F.. (1967) Scanning The Business Environment, Macmillan, New York, p.47. 3. Kotler, P., Armstrong, G., Brown, L., Chandler, S. A. (1998), Marketing, (4th edn), Prentice Hall, Sydney. Marketing Orientation A product can be designed depending on either a promotion focused strategy or a product focused strategy. Marketing Orientated Approach A promotion focused strategy indicates a company responds to what clients want. The choices taken are centered on details about consumers needs and wants, rather than what the company believes is right for the client. Most effective companies take a market-orientated strategy. Product Orientated Approach A product focused strategy indicates the company produces products depending on what it is good at making or doing, rather than what a client wants. This strategy is usually criticised because it often results in failed products particularly in well-established marketplaces. Most marketplaces are going towards a more market-orientated strategy because clients have become more experienced and need more wide range and better top quality. To contend, companies need to be more delicate to their consumers needs otherwise they will reduce revenue to their competitors. Joes approach was also product oriented. He did not consider the needs of customers. That caused the failure of Joes corner store.

Love in John Donnes A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning and Andrew Marv

Love in John Donne's A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning and Andrew Marvell's To His Coy Mistress John Donne's "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" and Andrew Marvell's To His Coy Mistress" both talk about love but has different views about it, one talks about physical love and the other talks about spiritual love. John Donne's "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" compared love to a circle while Andrew Marvel's "To His Coy Mistress" compared love to a straight line. Both poems are act of persuasions. "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" is persuading the reader that true love is eternal while "To His Coy Mistress" the speaker is persuading the mistress to make passionate sex with him. Therefore, with all of these similarities and differences, it's commendable to compare the two works of literature. "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" has a subtle theme of religion in itself particularly, Christianity in relation to life after death. The main theme of the poem is true love will continue on, even after death. Lines one through two illustrate the notion of afterlife. "As virtuous men pass mildly away, And whisper to their souls to go..." Essentially, it implies that we have souls, and souls are the immortal part of men (human beings). John Donne's notion that we have souls and there's life after death are presumably based on his Christian beliefs. Donne was born in England and raised by a prosperous Roman Catholic family. At the age of 42, Donne accepted ordination in the Angelican Church. He, then, became and earned a reputation as one of the greatest preachers (Abcarian and Klotz 1121). Donne was 60 years of age when he wrote the poem; presumably, he was still a preacher at the time. Therefore, his poem can be suggested as... ...ourning." Although the main central theme of the poems were directly opposite of each other, we can relate that physical love and spiritual love has a connection to each other. Physical love can turn to spiritual love or perhaps spiritual love can turn to physical love.   At one point or another, we have experienced both physical and spiritual love. On the surface, we can say that spiritual love is a cut above physical love. However, it's hypocritical to say that we do not come into contact with emotions such as desire or lust. Therefore, physical love is at the same level as spiritual love. It is merely difficult to admit that we do experience lust because it is not something to be proud about. Social convention dictates that we should not feel lust. Moreover, lust is one of the seven sins. However, lust is a valid emotion that every one experience once in a while.

Preston Hot Zone :: essays research papers

Preston's Hot Zone Imagine walking into a tiny village in Africa, suffering and dying from some unknown virus. As you approach the huts you hear the wails of pure agony from the afflicted tribe members. Coming closer, you smell the stench of vomit mixed with the bitter smell of warm blood. People inside lay dying in pools of their own vital fluids, coughing and vomiting up their own liquefied internal organs; their faces emotionless masks loosely hanging from their skulls, the connective tissue and collagen in their bodies turned to mush. Their skin bubbled up into a sea of tiny white blisters and spontaneous rips occurring at the slightest touch, pouring blood that refuses to coagulate. Hemmorging and massive clotting underneath the skin causing black and blue bruises all over the body. Their mouths bleeding around their teeth from hemorrhaging saliva glands and the sloughing off of their own tongues, throat lining, and wind pipe, crying tears of pure blood from hemorrhaging tear ducts and the disinte gration of the eyeball lining and bleeding from every opening on the body. You see the blood spattered room and pools of black vomit, expelled during the epileptic convulsions that accompany the last stages of death. Their hearts have bled into themselves, heart muscles softened and hemorrhaging , the brain clogged with dead blood cells (sludging of the brain), the liver bulging and yellow with deep cracks and the spleen a single hard blood clot. Babies with bloody noses born with red eyes lay dead from spontaneous abortions of affected mothers. It is the human slate-wiper, the invisible ultimate death, the filovirus named Ebola. The theme of Richard Preston's Hot Zone seems deal with man's one predator, the invisible one, the one thing that man cannot seek out and conquer, the one that lurks unseen and undetected in the shadows waiting for a warm body to make its new breeding ground in, with total disregard for person, social class, or status. We are "meat", as the biologists at the USAMRIID Institute stated, no names, no faces, no "individuality", the virus rips through our bodies with no thought, mechanical reproducers who sabotage our cells and used them as incubators until their "offspring" replicate to the point the cell wall bursts, releasing hundreds of new virus particles. Literally thousands of these "killers", as humans see them can be held on the point of an ink pen.

Taking Care of Our Elderly

Davis 1 E. Diana Davis ENGL 2010 Professor Asplund 21st September 2012 The Responsibility of Taking Care of Our Elders My grandmother knows a lot about how it feels to be left in a house alone, waiting for someone to assist her to just get out of bed. This Saturday morning I decided to go visit her while my grandfather was at dialysis. She was surprised to hear my voice as she turned her head over my way and smiled. I could hear the sound of relief in her voice just knowing her granddaughter was here to see about her.My grandmother has been blind since March 2012; she is a diabetic that has had an eye surgery to help repair a detached retina that is still healing. In the meanwhile she’s been dealing with paralysis on her right side from a stroke she suffered over twenty years ago, and it’s really taken a toll on her health. As I sat down beside her with a pen and paper I told her I wanted to get her point of view on how she feels about being an elderly person in this ha rd economy. I needed to know if they were able to cover all their needs on a fixed income. Did she really feel like her and my grandfather’s needs were really being met?As she began to tell me about her fears Davis 2 And concerns my heart sunk and I thought to myself, have we really failed to live up to the obligations of taking care of our elders. As she spoke in her little sweet tone, she made me aware of how hard it is to do simple things like taking a shower, cooking and even going to the restroom is a hard task to do these days. She said â€Å"I feel like everyone is too busy to lend a hand, and me and your grandfather don’t want to be a burden on you all. † I thought to myself as her granddaughter, was I even doing enough? Was the responsibility of taking care of our elderly been overlooked, or was it being passed down to the few faithful people who were getting burnt out on the responsibility? My grandparents as parents bared the moral, legal, and ethical responsibilities to care for their children. However, now that my grandparents have reached an age where they can no longer look after themselves, the duties of their adult children to support them is less clear. It is therefore only fair to say now that their children are grown up and now their parents have become elderly, they should take up the responsibility to provide a decent life for their parents. While it is not a legal obligation, it is a moral obligation and it’s time to pay forward what is owed to our parents/grandparents. It’s our responsibility to help any family member in need. Our family has raised us and helped to survive in this uncertain economy, so why shouldn't we help out when our parents and grandparents reach an age where they need our assistance? Davis 3 Only one out of in five people takes the needed steps to prepare legally and financially for taking care of an incapacitated parent. Consider this contrast between expectations and reality: Only 13 percent of some 4,000 U.S. workers surveyed for the 2011 (Aflac Work Forces Report) believe that the need for long-term care would affect their families. â€Å"The percentage of adult children providing personal care and/or financial assistance to a parent has more than tripled over the past 15 years,† the research group found. Of course, in today's tough economy, it also is common for elderly adults to be supporting their adult children. But in some ways, that's easier to accept: Parents often plan to leave whatever wealth they have to their children anyway. The flow of wealth from older to younger generation feels natural to many. But with Americans living so much longer now, the younger generation has to do more thinking about how they might care for parents who have exhausted their savings. After spending the whole day talking with my grandparents about their concerns I felt compelled to lend a hand. I made lunch for them and started to clean the kitchen. By the end of the day the whole house was spotless, and before I left I help my grandfather get my grandmother ready for bed.I have to say I was really exhausted when I finished, but the feeling I felt when I saw them smiling and relaxing together was worth a million bucks. As soon as I got home that night, I was determined that I had to help with this situation right away. The first thing to do was to call a family meeting. It was time for everyone to pull Davis 4 together and take up their responsibility to do their part. First thing we needed to do is put together a schedule and set it in stone. We all agreed that we would be assigned a day to go and check on our grandparents/parents.This action plan would include cooking, cleaning and donating at least a hundred dollars a month to help with their financial needs. So far this is working out great, and all it took was a concerned person to be a good listener and someone to pull a family together to put a plan in action. By working together as a family it helped to mend broken relationships and it helped us to accomplished many beautiful things. I’m happy to say my grandparents are well taken care now, and years have been added to their life span. Davis 5 Works Cited Http://www. aflac. com/ Aflac_WorkForces_Report 2011

P3 U2 Essay

P3: Describe the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who use health or social care services. Discrimination has the potential to affect individuals in wide-ranging ways. In health and social care, the effects of discrimination can be catastrophic and even end in the death of a service user. Anyone planning a career in health and social care should be aware of the potential negative effects caused by discrimination. We will explore them here. Marginalisation As you might expect, marginalisation means being pushed to the margins of society. In other words, you are unable to participate fully in the health and social care services that are available. Marginalisation can occur at both micro and macro levels. Governments have been accused of marginalising groups of the population in terms of their health and social care needs. Disempowerment People who are discriminated against (especially by powerful groups in society such as health care professionals) are often totally disempowered. This means they are not able to take action Individuals can be disempowered through another form of discrimination – ‘the health worker knows best’ syndrome. Low self-esteem and self-identity If we have high self-esteem and self-worth, it means that we appreciate our own worth and value ourselves highly. Conversely then, having low self-esteem means that we feel helpless and powerless to cope and can even feel depressed. People who are discriminated against are in real danger of developing low self-esteem, which can lead to them being unable to cope with life’s challenges and changes. This is particularly important for those individuals who have to cope with illness or changes in their social condition. If they are to cope well, they need to believe in themselves and their ability to manage, whatever situation they are in. Health care workers need to pay attention to an individual’s self-esteem and constantly work at improving this – this is a good method for helping individuals to cope positively with their situation. Restricted opportunities Discrimination, as we have already seen, has the potential to prevent access to health and social care services. This could be through the attitudes and beliefs of the health care workers who fail to value all individuals or it could be through the effects of low self-esteem. Negative behaviours  including aggression and criminality Another effect of discrimination can be seen in the behaviour of individuals. This is particularly noticeable in children, who often display negative behaviours in order to gain a ttention, even when that attention is negative! Adults and young people as a result of discrimination and low self-esteem can also display negative behavioural traits. However, in these cases the behaviour can take on a much more ‘sinister’ appearance. It may manifest itself as aggression towards those holding power (including health care professionals or those working in the employment and judicial services) and through criminal activity such as drug taking, burglary and physical violence. Loss of rights There have been cases in the national media of care homes, secure or forensic units (places of security for people with dangerous psychiatric behaviours) and individual carers being accused of systematically discriminating against the people in their care and overriding their individual rights by the use of power or force. Older, vulnerable people in residential or nursing care homes are at particular risk of abusive situations because of the high power base of those caring for them. There are occasions when statutory powers are used legitimately to override individual rights. In these cases, doctors and judges can take decisions together to place people in places of safety for their ‘own good’. Another example of the use of statutory powers in operation is when social workers need to work with others such as the police or medical service to take children from unsafe homes and place them in centres of safety.
